FSCS

The Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) transform schools into community hubs, integrating academics with comprehensive support like health/mental health services, family engagement, and extended learning to tackle barriers to student success, especially in high-poverty areas, by coordinating resources for the whole child and community through partnerships. These "one-stop-shops" offer everything from food/housing aid to job training, using the school building as a central, accessible resource for families and neighbors, boosting attendance, achievement, and graduation rates.
Key Service Areas (The 4 Pillars)
- Integrated Student Supports: On-site health clinics, mental health counseling, nutrition programs, and support for juvenile justice issues.
- Expanded Learning Opportunities: Early childhood education, after-school tutoring, summer programs, and enriched academic content.
- Family & Community Engagement: Parent education (ESL, literacy, finance), workforce development, and bringing community members into the school.
- Collaborative Leadership: School and community leaders work together to guide decisions and coordinate services.
How They Work
- Partnerships: Schools partner with local agencies (non-profits, health departments, etc.) to co-locate services.
- Accessibility: Services are available to students, families, and the community during school hours, evenings, weekends, and summers.
- Needs-Driven: Services are tailored to the specific needs identified by the community and families.
Benefits
- Improved Student Outcomes: Higher attendance, better grades, higher graduation rates.
- Reduced Barriers: Addresses non-academic issues like hunger, illness, and instability.
- Stronger Communities: Builds stronger family and community ties, making the school a neighborhood anchor.
